I'm still not sure if Capcom was being nice or flat-out evil when they delayed the european release date for this game until after Apollo Justice's release. No matter the case, I'm kind of thankful in the end. Was annoying as hell to wait for a release date when it had been out in America for about a year, though.
It feels like the Ace attorney series was meant to be a trilogy of games, until someone decided to make Apollo Justice for shits and giggles. The series could have ended with this one, it feels like it was meant to conclude the series at least. Won't go into details why, buy the game and find out yourself once you have played Ace attorney 1 and 2.
First off, I do NOT recommend this game for anyone who hasn't played Ace attorney 1 and 2, since this was probably meant to wrap up the series somewhat. If you do play this game before playing the other two, you will not get most of the plot, jokes, references and, most importantly, the ending. I cannot possibly recommend this game enough, go and buy it already!
I have most likely made a lot of people curious by talking about this game so highly, but I SERIOUSLY discourage anyone to check out this game before you have played through the other 2 and have them fairly fresh in your memory (the game do remind you of some past events, but it's easier to actually remember them yourself than have them told to you in flashbacks). Don't check out any trailers, don't check out any game footage, don't check out the soundtrack, don't check out anything! The only thing you should do is buy the other games (don't download) and finally this game. Ignore Apollo Justice for now. This game is much like Metal gear solid 4, it's only a masterpiece if you're played the other installments in the series beforehand, or better; grew up with them.
Although I guess I have to say SOMETHING other than "buy this game" for this to actually count as a review and not unprofessional and mindless praise. The only real complaint is that two of this game's cases are unimportant to the overall climax and are the definition of filler (although the other games have similar cases, such as Turnabout Big top). They are salvaged by some really fun and interesting characters. Not all characters are perfect, though. There are two in perticular I don't like, although they're not the worst Ace attorney characters ever. Those who have seen my video review of this game probably knows which ones they are.
The gameplay is the same as ever. Point, click, collect evidence, interview witnesses and cross examine them in court, etc. You know, the usual Ace attorney things. Justice for all gave us a new system that's reused this time as well, this game has no new gameplay elements to my knowledge. I'm not complaining, once again, why fix something that's not broken?
The soundtrack is the best in the series, hands down. I really don't want to talk about it too much and encourage people to listen to the soundtrack without playing the game first. I will say that this game has some of my all-time favorite tunes.
What really makes the game is the final case. One of the few moments in my gaming history that actually gave me a legit shock, without relying on horror, gore or something else that can be regarded as too easy. Trust me, this game has quite a few good twists. I admit that looking back on it and during replays of the game, some of the stuff gets somewhat silly and over the top sometimes. Then again, this is Ace attorney, over the top usually works to the games' advantage. It's like Planet of the apes, once you have bought the stupitity of the over-the-topness and odd premise, it's actually pretty good and sometimes all those things works suprisingly well. Oh, and this game has a fantastic villain as well. Seriously one of my all time favorites due to how different and sheer evil the villain is.
Buy this game!
Summary: Fans of the series will truely enjoy this game and non-fans are recommended to play the first two games in this series and prepare for one of the finest visual novels of all time.
