Phoenix Wright: Ace attorney: Justice for all (2007) DS

This review is protected by Fair use.

During the same week I got the first game in the Ace attorney series, I ordered the second installment (which I will refer to as JFA). The first game was just THAT good.

To be blunt, this game is not quite as good as the first, but it's far from terrible. Allow me to explain.

The premise is still the same: you are Phoenix Wright, attorney at law. Your job is to defend your client in court and prove that he or she is not guilty to whatever crime they so wrongfully have been accused of. I don't wish to tell you much more than that, becuase this game is heavily story driven and finding out the slightest plot detail yourself is the whole fun with the game. I will say that a few familiar faces will return and new characters will be introduced that have their impact on the series as a whole (or sometimes simply waste time, like Moe). I know that I was a bit vague on the premise during my review of PWAA, and I apologize for it. From now on, I will try to tell a synopsis of the basic premise a bit better.

Also, this game introduces a game element that will be used in future games. You will have to find out what that is on your own, though.

Fortunately, this game is still as fun as it was when I played it the first time. Games that rely heavy on stories and plot twists and the likes usually looses its charm and impact after a while. I personally think that this game have aged pretty well so far in terms of its story. Most of the cases have interesting storylines and finding out the true criminal is as fun and brainteasing as ever. However, I think one of the cases is plain and simple not that great and doesn't really add much to the overall plot. Not gonna say which one, but people who have seen my video review of this game knows what I'm talking about.

However, I will say that the very last case in this game is one of the best in the whole series. It's very dramatic and serious, but most of the sidecharacters make it slightly more lighthearted (trust me, most of the comic relief in this game works aside from THAT case). To be precise, an old character returns and is funnier than ever, although this character has a spacial suprise this time. So to say.

Another disappointment is the fact that this game has only four cases while the last game had five. Granted, the last case was added specifically for the DS port (remember, the three first Ace attorney games were originally GBA games), and used the touch screen a lot more than the other four. This is not the case with JFA, it has no extra case whatsoever. Although the last case is pretty darn good, something still feels missing somehow.

The soundtrack is a downgrade from the first, but I still like it. The songs that works really works and those that doesn't work REALLY doesn't work. I don't like to give examples in reviews of songs from games or movies, as I know people will check those songs out and wrongfully judge the whole game based on them, even if that's not intended on their part. Few songs from games can sum up the entire game perfectly, so I try not to recommend specific songs, but the whole soundtrack instead. Sure, I come across as vague, but it's a risk I'm willing to take. All in all, though, this game's soundtrack is pretty good and has some songs that will be reused in later games in the series, but it still has some somewhat lackluster pieces.

If I venture into even greater details about this game, I will flat-out ruin the experience for most of my readers (if I have any besides thee specific jerks). If you have played the previous game, this game is a must although it is not quite as good as its predecessor. If you have never heard of this series, then you have never visited the internet before check out the first game instead.

Summary: While a downgrade from its predecessor, this game will give most Ace attorney fans what they want and will genuinely suprise a few. Just don't expect any massive improvements.
